    Bhaskar-da,

If I am not mistaken, you were in Jadavpur ETCE department – 4 years senior to me. I grew up in Dover Court with Babu-da (Soumya) who lived in the apartment right above us. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a building full of talented musical personalities – obviously Meshomoshai (Sudhin Dasgupta) being one of them, as well as Y S Moolky and Nondon Bagchi.

Thanks for writing such a lovely article. As you mentioned, I am sure that most Bengalis do not know that Sudhin Dasgupta was a lyricist of the highest order. Two other songs come to my mind that are usually sung by Calcutta Youth Choir and people assume that those are written by Salil Chowdhury. They are

    1) Neel Akasher Oi Kole (Shymal Mitra)
    2) Sworno Jhora Surjyo Ronge (Subir Sen)

Your earlier article on the Manna Dey/Sudhin Dasgupta connection was also very well-written. Please keep on writing and educating the new generation.

    Thanks

    Arunabha

Thanks Arunabha!! Yes, I passed out from ETCE JU in 1983. Soumya was my classmate in Patha-Bhavan. Yes, as Salil C was more well known as a Lyricist, this confusions happened. You may read the book – “Sudhin Dashgupta” by Aajkal Prakashani which lists some really good articles.

Though not critically excellent, still fairly good and fresh for a reading in a blog which is particularly named, “Abosor”.
You know Bhaskarbabu, the real problem lies in the fact that we still believe that an art (say, like song writing) is a luxury of leisure. So right from its very birth it begs pity and charity.
Shit! ….. How can I make the so-called art-lovers understand that the thing which they think an object of “abosor” is actually our whole life and existence! We have spent thousands of sleepless nights, sacrificed every normal living-codes for this!
It is an unending, self-consuming process.
Do you remember the Aesop’s Fable, where some wanton boys were throwing stones into the pond for sheer fun? We are those frogs who are now standing up and saying: what is fun to you is actually our life!
Honour and respect can never be bestowed upon. It comes from within. You can not shout for justice when the listeners are taught to give you a deaf ear. Isn’t it?
I have written a long essay on this very topic in Sharodiya Aajkaal this year. It has been published in book form too. You can have a look, if you wish to.

    Love & Thanks,
    Saikat
